My rates depend on several factors:

  • the complexity of the source material
  • your expected turnaround time
  • the input/output file format
  • the presence or absence of reference materials
  • and whether any post-processing (such as layout corrections) is required.

Discounts are provided to translation agencies, students and educational institutions. I will be happy to provide an estimate—please feel free to get in touch with details.

For existing translations done by a third party, I can offer a signed statement of verification, pending a thorough content check process to ensure the document's accuracy. If you need an extra level of verification, I can enlist another translator to perform verification and signature. (Either choice is typically nearly as expensive as redoing the translation from scratch.) These choices may not meet some legal requirements—please understand your needs beforehand. I do not offer any other official notarization or certification services at present.

All of my translations are created, edited and checked by a human. In addition, I may use generative AI services or machine translation providers in a supportive and responsible role as a reference from time to time, for projects and clients that permit it. If you do not wish me to use these services at all during your job, feel free to let me know.

Microsoft Office (365) formats including Excel, PowerPoint and Word, Trados Studio packages (.sdlppx), Wordfast packages, Numbers/Pages/Keynote (for Mac), plain text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf), Markdown (.md), Adobe Illustrator (.ai) and more. I can also work with cloud translation providers such as Phrase TMS for corporate clients. PDF files and image files may be subject to preprocessing fees.

This depends on the complexity of the source material. For typical technical translations, I can comfortably handle around 4,000 Japanese characters a day. Note that my capacity may change depending on whether other projects are running at that time. I will be happy to discuss your schedule with you to set a reliable due date. Yes—I have translated captions and narration for training and product explanation videos in the past. Please note that the English translation may tend to be longer than the Japanese, due to the nature of the language, so plan your video contents accordingly.

Yes. I will be happy to review the contents before we begin and sign them if they are mutually satisfactory.

Yes. Note that I will assess the workability of your material before I begin, and may reject the machine-translated source material (and possibly the entire project) if the linguistic quality is too low.

Yes. I have done extensive work in the past with complex Illustrator and PowerPoint documents in particular.

I have lived and worked in Japan since 1993, spent over eighteen years as a full-time employee in a Japanese multimedia firm working with major global players such as Yamaha, Toyota Motor Corporation and Volkswagen, and have worked with large musical instrument and audio product manufacturers since 2012.

Yes, if the situation requires.

In general, I do not accept overnight jobs, unless they are of a limited nature. Note that there is a 30% surcharge for rush jobs (typically next-day jobs, or large-volume projects that require more than 5,000 characters per day of work to be done within a very short span).

My job is to leave clients satisfied. I will do my very best to ensure that you are happy with the results before we begin by asking all the necessary questions, obtaining any reference materials such as style guides, and clearly defining what you require.

While I have never found it necessary to offer a refund on anything I have done thus far (and have never been asked to do so), I am happy to revise and resubmit any parts of my translation if you find anything incorrect or if you happen to find any grammatical issues (rare). Note that I may not be able to accommodate requests after delivery on stylistic issues or on matters of personal taste. Let's get everything decided up front, so that I can give you exactly what you need.

In general, I do not accept work onsite with manufacturers or other clients for extended periods of time. However, I may be able to accommodate onsite needs for a short period of a few days at a time. Please contact me with your needs.
